You know how XEROGRAPHY DEBT is branded as a “review zine with per zine tendencies”? Well, Mike Faloon’s LEARNING TO SURF could almost be labeled as a per zine with music zine tendencies. It’s mostly personal stories with music playing some sort of role in the stories, be it minor (as in “Simple Pleasures in America”) or fairly major (as in Mike’s “10 Day Journals” where he spends 10 days listening to an album and writing a journal entry each day about it. He does this twice and I’ve never heard of either band yet I still read and enjoyed the whole thing so that should tell you something. I enjoyed this one. While you’re at it, Mike also wrote a book entitled THE HANGING GARDENS OF SPLIT ROCK by Gorsky Press which is also well worth your time. (Posted on 8/13/12)
