from Xerography Debt #31 Review by D. Blake Werts
This one was one of those zines, as a reviewer, you just have to suck it in and start reading. You know the kind: legal digest with lots of pages of really small print cut-and-pasted with very few illustrations to break things up. And since you are reading this review, you can be assured that I liked what I read. In fact, Jonas had me hooked after a couple of pages. The framework he used to lure the reader in certainly caught me.

From what I gather, this is Jonas’s first zine, though he’s been writing for a few years on another larger project he’s calling “The Greatest Most Traveling Circus.” I believe the zine began as a shrink’s project to have Jonas address some ideas to his yet-to-be-born child. And what Jonas gives us in Cheer The Eff Up is wonderful walk through how he and his wife came together, with all of the growing up and school and parents and friends, etc., etc. I’m sure many of you have read zines like this before. I get that—this is nothing new.

However, Jonas’s spins out some well polished writing covering just those details you need to have and leaving out the chaff lesser authors use to fill pages.

In his words, Cheer The Eff Up is “a zine about washed-up punks, psychics, and cake.” This is a great perzine, one of the best that I’ve read in a while. Strong recommendations all around. I’m looking forward to seeing “Greatest Most Traveling Circus” come to fruition. I’d really enjoy reading more of Jonas’s work. (Posted on 8/13/12)
