Book review//Just Kids by Patti Smith Review by Katie
Patti Smith does an excellent job merging the poetic and the possible in prose. In Just Kids she rebuilds a time of dramatic changes in society and music, strange art scenes and recollections of childhood. Woven through strongly is her relationship with controversial artist Mapplethorpe which, like the book, is oddly formulated but utterly convincing. Just Kids also documents Smith's meteoric rise to punk notoriety. (Posted on 6/12/13)
Staff Pick Review by Lauren Eichelberger
Just Kids is Patti's story of her relationship with the artist Robert Mapplethorpe. It's an unlikely love story filled with hardship, growth, discovery, understanding and utter devotion. I enjoyed the cast of characters that Patti met along the way like Hendrix, Joplin and assorted artists that you will certainly know. Just Kids is also the story of the Chelsea Hotel and New York underground in the late 60's and early 70's. Not only an autobiography but a history of life, love, and art. A beautiful book.
