Maybe you are familiar with slingshots, plungers, rollovers, or drop targets. But if you’re like me, you didn’t know the names of these pinball targets, even if you enjoy smashing silver balls into them! You’ll learn about these targets, pinball history, and pinball culture in the Introduction issue.
DROP TARGET #1 oozes goodness from the get-go. Sporting an eye-catching, silkscreen cover wrapped around pages busting with some of the most professionally-designed internals that I’ve seen in a DIY publication. Distinguished illustrators, the zine is loaded with illustrations—there is a full color centerfold sporting a Harry Potter “Dream Machine” as imagined by Longstreth! As alluded to, we have a pinball glossary, an interview with Brinda Coleman and Sam Soule, creators of the 90’s zine MULTIBALL, a review of the Star Wars Episode One pin, “Dream Machines” Harry Potter and Lawrence of Arabia, Pinhalls of White River Junction, Vermont, and a review of the DVD set “TILT: The Battle to Save Pinball,” before saving the best for last, a sixteen-page comic by Longstreth “from ZEROES to HEROES Part One: Obsession” chronicling Jon and Alec’s (re)discovery of the lure of the silver ball. While I love a good litzine, I can always make room for an “everything” zine: a mix of information, history, storytelling, craftsmanship, quality comics and illustration work. These guys love this stuff and the passion is hard to hide. Even better is they’ve already got the next SIX issues planned! (Posted on 8/12/12)
