The fine minds that gave us the Biggest Assholes in Rock issue and the Pay Not To Play (where they offer certain bands cash money if they would agree to break up) issue are back. The focus this time? Overrated records. But honestly, there are too many to name, so CHUNKLET is running a 2-parter.
This issue, Part 1, contains a list of all the most overrated records before 1991. And whether you love 'em or hate 'em for it, you gotta agree that they are right on the mark with just about every one.
I'm not a big fan of interviews, but the interview with comedienne Sarah Silverman by Andrew Earles is laugh-out-loud funny, especially the footnotes. You want more? This issue has Jon Benjamin, the funniest voice in cartoons, Bob Odenkirk (of Bob & David of Mr. Show), our pal Neal Pollack, cartoons by Paul Hornschemeier, and more. Ben Blackwell's ASSHOLES ACROSS AMERICA features Baltimore's own Convocation Of. And several pieces on various rock gestures are really funny too.
But the heart, the meat of this issue is The Overrated Records, and the list of 1000 Unrelated Overrated Things that accompanies it.
Someone recently complained to me that CHUNKLET was mean. Just look at the design work on this magazine, the attention to detail. This is a labor of love. The only people who talk about what's overrated, whether it's overrated films, atheletes, bands, records, books, writers, whatever, are people who love what they're talking about.
Mean? Maybe. But call it tough love.
This magazine isn't afraid to call an asshole an asshole, and that, my friends, is something you simply do not see in any other music magazine.
Oh, and when was the last time a magazine made you laugh out loud? That alone is worth the paltry $6.95.
