Smile, Hon, You’re In Flagrante! is a special issue of William P. Tandy’s longrunning zine (replace "flagrante" with "Baltimore"), this time focused on s-e-x. It was decidedly strange to open this issue up and see the same model release information (everyone inside is 18!) that I used to see someplace in all the porno titles I used to distribute for Tower Records. Speaking of which, did you know that, in the magazine industry, stroke mags are called "sophisticates"? Most of them aren’t, of course... but Smile, Hon, You’re In Flagrante! is both sophisticated AND about sex. That’s not easy to accomplish, and is one of the many things to like about it. There are 80 page’s-worth of stories, photography, anecdotes, and comics, and almost all of them are worth your time. The authors are almost evenly distributed by sex, and the overall tone is Anaïs Nin rather than Penthouse Letters. And most importantly, the erotic content is balanced perfectly by loads of humor and honesty. “The Middle of The Three Pack,” about that hidden magazine you get when you pony up for those shrink-wrapped bargain 3-for-$10 packs, made me laugh out loud. I can’t recommend this highly enough — well worth your $5.
