URINAL GUM is one of those zines that I would never considered purchasing based on the content. From a reader’s letter reprinted in this issue, Drunken Brandon writes, “Reading your obzine is a true pleasure! Finally a mainstream publication that represents my interests — pee pots, crude sex jokes, phallic innuendo. Thank you for uncovering, rediscovering, unearthing these nuggets of truth!” In a general sense, that about covers it. Contents include Reader Mail, A Guide to Choosing the Right News Source, A Review of Mister Ooh-La-La’s Earth Day, Interview with Earth Day Director Mister Ooh La-La, The Top 5 Most Disturbing Movies of All Time, How Smoking is Actually Good For You!, a letter to the Modern Language Association, A Field Trip to the Terwilliger Hot Springs, “My daddy ate my eyes,” Restaurant Review: China Sun, and finally a Book Review: The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren.
A very nicely packaged zine, cut and paste style, good presentation. With some tinges of guilt, I did read the zine from cover to cover—that’s what reviewers are supposed to do, right? And I have to admit that I did laugh out loud a couple of times. There are indeed some funny comments sprinkled throughout. Will this zine ever expand my cultural acumen? Will this zine ever teach me good from bad? Likely not. Does every zine have to?
