SUGAR NEEDLE documents candy from around the world, usually with strange and delightful names. In this issue, learn about Banana Skids, Snap and Crackle, Pihlaja, Kit Kats, Cote d’Or Noir de Noir, Bumble Bar, Hacks, Chocolate Limes, Panda, Belly Flops and the band Guantanamobaywatch. Hyper and fun, like a sugarized kid. I enjoyed the memories sparked by Piramides, a black licorice candy from Iceland. When my husband and I were in Ghana, we met a lot of Dutch people. They’d come back after visiting their families, armed with a revolting concoction called double salt black licorice. I tried one and nearly threw up, and I couldn’t understand the appeal. However, such confections have a home in SUGAR NEEDLE, where all candy is welcome.
